Saturday 9th March

Free ‘Science Discovery Day’ for children

The Castle Bude, EX23 8LG

To celebrate British Science week 2019, The Castle is planning a day of fun scientific activities for created in mind for children aged 5-11 years; Key Stages 1 and 2.

The theme this year is ‘Journeys’, a perfect opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our very own pioneer of the steam driven carriage, Sir Goldsworthy Gurney, who lived in Bude and who built The Castle.

The day will consist of a series of workshops based around Gurney’s inventions, as well as those of his contemporaries. There will be two sessions in the morning based on two of Gurney’s most famous inventions, the steam carriage and the Bude Light. Children will be able to take part in simple experiments and demonstrations using prisms, mirrors and light, and a model steam traction engine. There are limited spaces for the morning workshops and therefore booking is essential.

In the afternoon, children will be able to have fun creating model gliders and racing toy Penny Farthings, both of which were invented by British inventors. It is hoped that the day will provide a fun way for children to learn about the work of British Victorian Scientists as well as Bude’s forgotten genius, Sir Goldsworthy Gurney.

Timings:
10.15am – 11am: Prysms and mirrors (Booking required)
11am – 11.45am: Model Steam Engine (Booking required)
1.30pm – 3pm: Penny Farthing racing and model glider crafting (Booking not essential)
